Uzbekistan Strikes Oil: Uzbekistan has struck oil, but the Central Asian country’s newly found wealth is gushing out of control, according to Commonwealth of Independent States television. Oil workers from the neighboring republics of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan were helping to harness the flow from the well in the Fergana Valley. “Many years of searching for oil in this region have been crowned recently with this powerful, at present uncontrollable, gusher,” the television said. Uzbekistan, a cotton-producing former Soviet republic, has rich mineral resources but accounts for only a small part of oil output in the Commonwealth of Independent States that replaced the Soviet Union last year.
