From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley announced in a national broadcast that he will resign March 28 because of poor health, ending a family political dynasty that led the Caribbean island to independence. Manley, 67, said his ruling People’s National Party will meet March 28 to select a new party leader. Manley’s decision to step down from office had been rumored since his latest bout with pneumonia. He has undergone five operations in recent years, including surgery for prostate cancer and diverticulitis.
