Volkswagen to Eliminate 300 Jobs: Volkswagen of America said it will cut 300 jobs, including some positions in Westlake Village, because of slow sales. The bulk of the cuts--25% of the company’s U.S. work force--will come at its headquarters near Detroit. About 830 of the firm’s 1,200 U.S. employees work there. Besides Westlake Village, other cuts will be in Orangeburg, N.Y.; Lanham, Md.; Lincolnshire, Ill., and San Antonio. Volkswagen sales fell 29% in 1991, and are down 12.7% this year. The firm closed its lone U.S. manufacturing operation in Westmoreland, Pa., in 1988 and now imports cars from Mexico and Germany.
