Electronics Industry Jobs Lost in 1991: America’s electronics industry, once one of the fastest-growing sectors of the U.S. economy, lost 90,000 jobs last year--the sharpest annual drop ever recorded, the American Electronics Assn. reported. With a work force of 2.39 million, electronics companies employ fewer people now than in 1986, when they were recovering from an industrywide shakeout, the trade group said. Analysts blame the large number of job losses on an economic one-two punch. The recession hit just as many companies were restructuring operations to adapt to competition and changing markets.
