San Clemente Firm Seeks Laser Test OK

SAN CLEMENTE — Laser Medical Technology Inc. has applied for Food and Drug Administration permission for clinical testing of a laser to use in cutting a tooth root.
The San Clemente-based company’s Laser-35 includes a patented air and water mist system that cools the mouth while the laser is used. Company officials said it is the only laser available that cuts teeth and bone tissue without damaging surrounding tissue.
The approval will enable the company to gather information on the safety and effectiveness of the laser before the FDA considers whether the device can be marketed to dentists and oral surgeons.
In May, 1991, the company received FDA permission to market Laser-35 for surgeries on soft tissue in the mouth.
