Religion Ban

Share

Just when we thought totalitarianism was waning, Los Angeles Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky contends that “religion--any religion--has no place in government,” and seeks a ban on using “city resources to advance religion in any way” (March 13). If Yaroslavsky has his way, the government of Los Angeles will begin a campaign of anti-religious suppression that will work against its own interests.

Yaroslavsky amazingly ignores the fact that religious beliefs and practices are an intrinsic aspect of virtually every society that has ever existed. Most religions preach and practice positive social actions such as aiding the poor and victims of injustice. If government officials promote social justice, or otherwise exhibit virtue, might his proposals ban their activities?

Religious people would not even be able to exhibit charity or goodwill in public places, for fear of violating the ban.

Proposing suppression and attempting thought control is a simplistic, dangerous course for an elected official. If Yaroslavsky wants to remain in office, he should concentrate instead on responsibly using all city resources (including people) to advance the community interest.
