Dewi in Huntington Still Doing Business

Dewi Indonesian Restaurant in Huntington Beach is alive and well in its 5-year-old location on Hamilton Avenue, contrary to an earlier report in this column that it was closed and moving to a new location. The Dewi which closed was on Tustin Avenue in Orange and there is no connection between it and the Huntington Beach Dewi, where owners Charles and Edith Gilhuys continue preparing the traditional fare their customers love. That means nasi rames, a mixed rice plate with seven different Indonesian goodies, priced at $5.75. It also means satay (barbecued pork or chicken, cooked from scratch on a stick with peanut sauce) at $5.25 for an entree-sized serving, and gado-gado, an Indonesian salad of green beans, spinach, bean sprouts, tofu, lettuce or cabbage with peanut butter sauce, $4.75. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Friday from 3 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at 9606 Hamilton Ave., between Bushard and Brookhurst Streets. Restaurateur David Wilhelm has come up with a reward system for those who frequent his four Orange County restaurants. Diners at Kachina in Laguna Beach, Barbacoa in Newport Beach, and Irvine’s Zuni Grill and Bistro 201 may become card-carrying members of the Sarsaparilla Club, receiving credit for the amount of each restaurant bill. When a customer reaches $500 in purchases, obtained in $25 increments (each bill is rounded down unless it’s within $5 of the higher increment; for example, a $44 tab only gets credit for $25, but a $46 meal counts as $50), he or she will receive a $75 credit toward a meal at any of the restaurants. Cards are available at each of the four locations.

Wilhelm, president of West Coast Restaurant Ventures, numbers among his upcoming ventures an Orange county version of the L.A. celebrity nightclub, Roxbury, and an as yet unnamed restaurant in the new Plaza Tower near South Coast Plaza.

Meanwhile, Cafe Lido Supper Club offers membership in the Lido Dining Club for a prepaid fee of $25. Members receive one complimentary dinner entree when a second dinner entree of equal or greater value is purchased. The card may be used twice a month for a maximum value of $20 each visit, Sunday through Thursday nights. The supper club is open nightly from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., with dinner service from 6 p.m. to midnight, and till 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. There’s entertainment nightly. 501 30th St., Newport Beach. Beresford Wall, who departed his job as manager of Hastings in the Anaheim Hilton and Towers to help Randi Masotti open Cafe Looma in Newport Beach, is now assistant food and beverage manager at the Waterfront Hilton in Huntington Beach.

Five Feet’s Far Niente winemaker dinner on April 6 is almost fully booked. But you might still get in on the tasting of ‘88, ’89 and ’90 Chardonnays, as well as Cabernets from ‘82, ’85 and ‘88, plus Dolce, a previously unreleased dessert wine. Of course, the wines will be complimented by Michael Kang’s cuisine. The cost: $65 per person. The reception is at 7 p.m., dinner at 7:30 at 328 Glenneyre St., Laguna Beach. Maxi’s Grill in the Red Lion Inn in Costa Mesa, has been “de-formalized,” transformed into a more casual restaurant, with the accent on pastas, grilled meats and seafood, and with nothing priced over $19.25. The new menu has spinach tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and Alfredo sauce for $9.95; a 16-ounce grilled pork chop for $14.95; and a mixed grill of beef filet, lamb chop and chicken sausage for $15.95.
