American, Canadian Airlines Confirm Talks: American Airlines Inc. and PWA Corp., parent of Canadian Airlines International, said they were negotiating a strategic alliance. The airlines are discussing equity issues, joint marketing programs and reciprocal services. American Chairman Robert Crandall said the “preliminary discussions have established the basis for an agreement which will strengthen the competitive position of both carriers in the industry.” American, based in Ft. Worth, could fill the gap in its international system by taking advantage of Canadian Air’s routes to Asia. The airline, based in Calgary, flies from Vancouver to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok.
