3 Olympic Figure Skaters to Be Honored

Christopher Bowman, the U. S. figure-skating champion who placed fourth in the men’s competition in the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, will be honored with his parents in a “Welcome Home” ceremony at 3:30 p.m. today at the Van Nuys Main Post Office.

Bowman will autograph limited-edition collectible envelopes issued by the Postal Service to support the “Celebrate the Dream” program that helped family members share the Olympic experience by joining the athletes in Albertville.

An Olympic flag flown at Albertville will be presented to Bowman’s parents by William G. Jackson, Van Nuys Division general manager-postmaster. The post office is at 15701 Sherman Way.

Similar ceremonies featuring figure skaters Todd Sand of Thousand Oaks and Natasha Kuchiki of Canoga Park also will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, at their respective hometown post offices.

The Thousand Oaks Post Office is at 3435 Thousand Oaks Blvd., and the Canoga Park Post Office is at 8201 Canoga Ave.

Jeff deLaveaga, a senior guard for Cal Lutheran (16-12), has been named second-team NCAA Division III All-American by the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches. DeLaveaga was the leading scorer in Division III with a 29.5 average.

DeLaveaga scored 32 and 38 points in Cal Lutheran’s NCAA Division III tournament games. He scored 20 or more points in 25 of 28 games, 30 or more in 14 games and 40 or more in three games.

Seven people will be inducted into the Cal State Northridge Athletic Hall of Fame on April 5 at The Odyssey restaurant in Granada Hills.

Inductees include: John (Jack) Dyck (basketball), Mike Kane (football), Crista Lawrence (swimming), Michael McAndrew (soccer), Douglas McKenzie (baseball), Edmund Peckman (administration) and Kathy Slaten-Ayala (softball).

Men’s volleyball Coach John Price will be honored as the Northridge coach of the year for the 1990-91 season. Price guided the Matadors to a 22-7 record and a No. 3 national ranking.

The athletic department also will honor team physician Lester Cohn with a special service award and Howard Kuebler as booster of the year.

The Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club will play host to the 10th Ventura County Ocean Racing circuit, beginning with a race April 4.
