The Sound and the Fury Over KUSC : POINT . . .

“M ore Talk, Less Bach,” last Sunday’s story on KUSC-FM by Patrick Mott, has prompted an outpouring from readers . Those critical of the station’s revamped format outnumbered supporters by more than 2 to 1. A sampling of their views: Count me among the former KUSC subscribers who feel betrayed by the recent dumbing down of what used to be a top-notch radio station.

I can remember when KUSC took pride in playing entire symphonies and concertos in the morning, instead of five-minute selections interspersed with interminable nattering. Call me highbrow, but I’d rather listen to a Schubert Mass than to Grice’s relentless self-promotion and adolescent jokes, mispronounced words, commentary on the antics of the studio mouse and descriptions of what the engineer is wearing that day.

But hey. Contributions are up $300,000, and that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Why not hire Howard Stern for the morning slot, and watch those contributions go through the roof!
