SIMI VALLEY : Panel Urges School Boundary Changes

Share

In an effort to increase student safety, a Simi Valley school task force is recommending boundary changes for 14 local schools this fall.

Although the proposed changes involve nearly half of the 26 schools in the Simi Valley Unified School District, officials estimate that 225 students in the 18,000-student district would be affected. In several instances, students are already attending the recommended school for their area on an intradistrict transfer.

Of the 10 proposed changes, two would be optional, giving parents the choice of sending their children to one of two nearby schools.

The changes are being recommended by a task force consisting of school district officials, school administrators, teachers and PTA members. The group was formed last year to annually consider school boundary lines.

Boundary changes are proposed for Royal and Simi high schools; Hillside, Sequoia, Sinaloa and Valley View junior high schools; and Atherwood, Berylwood, Crestview, Garden Grove, Mt. View, Simi, Sycamore and Township elementary schools.

Information will be sent to parents whose children would be affected by the proposed changes. In addition, informational meetings will be held at various schools before a public hearing at the next school board meeting at 7 p.m. on April 7 at Simi Valley City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

If approved by the school board on April 21, the new boundaries would become effective in September.
