Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Charity’s Affiliates Urged to Pay Dues

United Way of America’s acting president warned that the national organization may be dismantled unless affiliates forward the dues they withheld to protest his predecessor’s lavish spending. Interim President Kenneth Dam asked representatives of the local chapters to show understanding, saying a series of cost-cutting measures are already in place. Many of the nation’s 1,400 United Way affiliates have withheld dues to protest the $463,000 annual salary and generous perks given former President William Aramony.
