Software, Hard Sell?: San Diego-based Ventura Software Inc., which makes Ventura Publisher and other products for desktop computer document publishing, has awarded its advertising and public relations business to Clark & Westlund Inc. in Huntington Beach. The account will bring $3 million to $4 million in fees to Clark & Westlund over the coming year, said Dean Thie, the agency’s vice president of public relations.

Ventura Software, a subsidiary of Xerox Corp., will be trying to set itself apart from the crowded desktop publishing market, Thie said. The campaign is aimed at business and government agencies that publish lengthy, complex documents.

Thie said the software company approached his firm after seeing work it had done for other high-tech clients, including Costa Mesa-based Emulex Corp. Previously, Gray Advertising’s San Francisco office handled advertising for Ventura Software, and Hill & Knowlton in Santa Clara did the company’s public relations work.
