David R. Dukes picked up two new titles Tuesday as Ingram Micro announced his promotion to co-chairman and chief operating officer of the computer distribution company.

Linwood A. (Chip) Lacy, chief executive, will share the chairmanship with Dukes as part of a newly created executive team. A new president will be appointed later to replace Dukes.

“With our company moving toward $3 billion in annual worldwide revenue,” Lacy said in a statement, “David and I decided the company’s management of operations, strategic vendor and customer relationships and international growth required an expanded executive management team.”

Lacy said the promotion would allow Dukes to broaden his impact on company operations.

Dukes joined Ingram Micro as president in September, 1989. He spent nine years in the computer retail industry as a value-added reseller, or dealer who packages computers with custom software and sells the packages to a specific market.

The specific functions of the new executive office will be outlined over the next few months, the company said. Its purpose is to give Lacy and Dukes more time to concentrate on their own strategic goals.

Lacy will focus on developing “emerging aspects of the company’s business” and new markets, the statement said, while Dukes will focus on strategic vendor and worldwide customer opportunities.

Ingram Micro, a subsidiary of Ingram Industries in Nashville, Tenn., reported $2 billion in sales for 1991.
