Second-Ranked Stanford Scores Big Win over SDSU

Second-ranked Stanford upended San Diego State’s women’s tennis team, 5-1, in a nonconference match at SDSU Tuesday. The schools opted not to play doubles because the outcome of the match had already been decided.

The Aztecs’ lone winner was Tanya Lauer, at No. 5 singles. Lauer defeated Marla Carruth, 6-0, 6-3. Thirteenth-ranked SDSU fell to 6-5. Stanford is 15-1.

Kim Wright and Monica Clancy won at the No.’s 1 and 2 singles spots, then did the same as the No. 1 doubles team as Point Loma Nazarene turned back Pacific Lutheran, 7-2. Wright and Clancy gave up only four games between them in singles, and five games in doubles as the Crusaders improved to 9-4. Pacific Lutheran is 4-9.

No. 14 University of San Diego improved to 10-2 with a 7-2 victory over Northwestern at USD’s West Courts. All six Torera singles players won in straight sets, led by 17th-ranked Julie McKeon, who beat La Jolla’s Branaca Elsberry, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Laura Richards of Vista, ranked No. 22, defeated Lindsay Matthews, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for the Toreras, who host No. 2 Stanford at 1:30 p.m. today.

MEN’S TENNIS

USD senior Jose Luis Noriega remains the No. 1 college singles player, according to the latest Volvo/ITCA Collegiate ranking, released Tuesday. Noriega is 16-0.

SDSU, ranked 25th for the third consecutive year in Tuesday’s poll, moved to 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference (10-2 overall) with a 5-3 victory over Utah (9-3, 3-2) at the West Courts. The Aztecs’ No. 21 doubles team of Jeff Belloli and Chris Numbers clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ed Peregrino and Sjur Paulsen.

PLNC blanked Pacific Lutheran, 9-0 in a nonconference match at PLNC. The Crusaders (9-2) outscored the visitors, 114-47 in games. PLNC won all singles matches, and two of the three doubles matches in straight sets.

BASEBALL

USD rallied from 4-0 and 5-1 deficits with one run in the third and six in the fourth to give the Toreros a 9-6 victory over Cal State Los Angeles. It was the Toreros’ seventh victory in the last nine games. Two-run homers by Tony Moeder and triples by John Fenn and Brady Clark helped USD (16-13) to its six-run burst.

Point Loma Nazarene dropped a Golden State Athletic Conference game to Cal Baptist, 6-1. With two out in the fifth, Derek Nugent hit a two-run double to spark the three-run inning. Cal Baptist improved to 5-15-1, 2-3-1; PLNC is 10-14-1, 2-7.

SOFTBALL

USD split a nonconference doubleheader with DePaul, winning the 10-inning opener, 5-4, and losing the nightcap, 5-0, to snap an eight-game winning streak. Angie Straub homered in fifth and scored the winning run in the 10th after she tripled and scored on June Andrews’ single in game one. Pitcher Tiffany Wasilewski (7-1) got the victory.

PLNC dropped a doubleheader to Cal Baptist to stay winless in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Crusaders (6-6, 0-4) lost the first game, 5-3, then was pounded, 14-1, in the second. On the day, PLNC committed 10 errors to Cal Baptist’s none.

In the first game, Robin Rabello got her only extra base hit of the day, an RBI double in the three-run sixth.
