Unocal Chief Assails Electric Cars: “Who wants to be cruising around our roads and highways in an oversized golf cart?” Unocal Corp. Chairman Richard Stegemeier asked in a speech to the National Petroleum Refiners’ Assn., meeting in New Orleans. Stegemeier, whose gas and oil company has actively promoted natural gas vehicles to meet clean air standards, said that even the latest generation of electric cars will be expensive and inconvenient to operate. He was particularly critical of General Motors Corp.’s Impact, a two-seat electric car that GM says will be marketed in the mid-1990s.
