Loral Pursues Asian Companies in Patent Suit: Loral Fairchild Corp., a unit of Loral Corp. of New York, has filed suit against Japan’s consumer electronic giants, charging that they have used a proprietary computer chip process in everything from photocopiers to fax machines. The suit was filed in September in a Virginia federal court and transferred to the Eastern District of New York. Loral had not previously announced that it had filed the suit. Analysts in Tokyo said about 30 companies were named in the suit, including the biggest in Japanese electronics and South Korean manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and Goldstar Co. They said the suit was novel because it names not only the companies that Loral says copied the chip, but also those that used it in everyday consumer electronics machines.
