SAN DIEGO : D.A. to Seek Death Penalty for Prince

Share

Cleophus Prince Jr. was formally informed Thursday that prosecutors will seek the death penalty against him if he is convicted of killing six women in 1990.

Prince, 24, pleaded not guilty to the six murder charges and 26 other charges in his appearance before San Diego Superior Court Judge Frederic L. Link.

Special circumstances charges alleging that he killed multiple victims and killed one woman during a rape were filed last year. But Deputy Dist. Atty. Daniel Lamborn had not disclosed until Thursday whether his office would seek the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole if Prince were convicted.

During Prince’s arraignment, Link told Prince of the district attorney’s decision. A trial date will be set April 14.

Afterward, Lamborn told reporters that the earliest Prince will probably stand trial might be this fall. He said the defense “wants more time” to investigate, and it will probably file a change-of-venue motion to move the trial out of San Diego County.

“We never stop investigating (either),” said the prosecutor. “We have some things not answered.”
