A 2-year-old Simi Valley boy was in critical condition Friday after being rescued from the bottom of his family’s pool by a neighbor, officials said.

Carlos Hernandez was playing with his 3 1/2-year-old sister in their back yard when he fell into the pool, police said. He had been trying to retrieve a toy.

Natalia Hernandez, 37, tried to rescue her son, but could not pull him from the pool, police said.

Upon hearing her screams, neighbor Gary Burns, 38, rushed to the pool and dove in to save Carlos, police said.

By then, Simi Valley Police Officer Steve Ming had arrived--two minutes after receiving a 911 call--and gave Carlos cardiopulmonary resuscitation until firefighters arrived, police said.

Continuing resuscitation, firefighters took Carlos in a fire truck to Simi Valley Hospital, where he was transferred by ambulance to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles at 1:50 p.m.
