CAMARILLO : Sewer-Main Bid Is Less Than Expected

Share

For the city of Camarillo, the recession may have its good points.

The winning bid to replace 7 1/2 miles of sewer mains in Camarillo, the largest contract in the city’s history, has come in at $1.48 million under the city engineer’s estimate.

After congratulating Engineering Director Daniel Greeley for bringing in such low bids, City Council members accepted a $4.2-million bid last week from Utah Pacific Construction of Murrieta in Riverside County. It was the lowest of 16 bids for the job.

Camarillo Mayor Stanley J. Daily said he could barely find a parking space for the bid openings at City Hall, which 60 people attended.

“I think contractors are hungry right now,” said Vice Mayor Charlotte Craven, who attributed the low bids to increased competition because of the bleak economic times.

Council members also accepted the lowest of 11 bids to construct three new sewer-pumping stations, $3.05 million from Merco Construction Engineers Inc. of Camarillo. That bid came in $245,000 lower than the city engineer’s estimate.
