Dennis Eck, the No. 2 executive of Vons Companies Inc., has been named president of the company. Vons is Southern California’s largest supermarket chain operator. Eck retains his position as the company’s chief operating officer, but will give up the title of vice chairman.

The changes in titles and duties follows the retirement Tuesday of Bill Davila, who had been Vons’ president. Davila will become president emeritus, a new position. He will continue as the company’s advertising spokesman and also will retain a seat on Vons’ board of directors.

As president and chief operating officer, Eck is responsible for overseeing operations of the company. He reports directly to Roger E. Stangeland, chairman of the board and chief executive. Eck also serves on Vons’ board.

“Dennis has clearly demonstrated his leadership skills, as well as his ability to translate new ideas into improved operations that benefit our customers, employees and shareholders,” Stangeland said. “I am confident he will help to ensure Vons continued success in the future.”

Eck has been chief operating officer of Vons for two years. He previously was chairman and chief executive of American Food & Drug Inc., a division of American Stores Co., and held a variety of executive management positions with American Stores in the corporation’s Acme Markets, Sav-On Drugs and Jewel Foods divisions.
