SANTA ANA : Boy Comes Within Eyelash of Tragedy

Share

An 8-year-old boy suffered minor injuries Tuesday afternoon when he caught his eyelid on the top of a chain-link fence, fire officials said.

Hector Gonzalez and schoolmates were jostling each other while waiting for the school bus at Russell Elementary School when Hector, a second-grader, was pushed into the four-foot-high fence. One of the metal fence strands caught under his right eyelid.

While waiting for paramedics to arrive, a school administrator and another child helped support Gonzalez about six inches off the ground to keep his eyelid from pulling, said Tony Suarez, an engineer with the Santa Ana Fire Department.

Paramedics cut away the fence, and the metal piece caught in his skin fell free.

The boy was treated and released at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said there did not appear to be any damage to the boy’s eye.

“He was a lucky boy,” Suarez said.
