Slain Sailor’s Jeep Sought by Police

Share

San Diego police were searching Wednesday for a red Jeep Wrangler owned by one of two Navy enlisted men who were shot to death in a City Heights apartment.

The sailors, whose identities are being withheld until their families have been notified, were discovered Tuesday night at the apartment they rented in the 4800 block of Lantana Drive, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Homicide Lt. John Welter said both men had been shot in the head.

Neighbors told police that they heard shots about 10:30 p.m. Monday, but it isn’t known whether the shots are related to the slayings, Welter said. Police are trying to locate as many as three other men, believed to be roommates of the victims, for questioning. But so far no suspects have been identified and a motive for the slayings has not been determined, Welter said.

Authorities said the dead men were in their mid-20s and crewmen on the amphibious assault ship Tarawa.

Navy spokesman Chief Martin Wicklund declined to comment on the slayings, but he said one of the sailors was from Ohio and the other was from Florida.

Robinson said the Jeep being sought is red with a black removable top, mag wheels and a blue and white Ohio license plate, KSFO11.

Anyone with information relating to the whereabouts of the Jeep is urged to call San Diego homicide detectives at 531-2288.
