Old and New World Music
The Ventura County Symphony continues its Pearl Anniversary season on Saturday with a concert neatly divided between the music of European masters and 20th-Century Latin American composers.
In the penultimate concert to be officially conducted by the orchestra’s founding maestro, Frank Salazar, the program ranges from the fresh to the familiar.
Harpist Nancy Allen will be the featured soloist in a performance of the Harp Concerto by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. One of the best-known harpists in the country, Allen has made numerous recordings and has received two Grammy nominations.
Soprano Camille King will sing the lead in Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa Lobos. King appeared with the Ventura County Symphony in last year’s performance of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony.
Rounding out the program will be Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 and, to close, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F, Op. 93.
The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. at the Oxnard Civic Auditorium, 800 Hobson Way. Tickets are $12, $17, $20 and $25. Discount tickets are available to senior citizens and students. For more information, call 643-8646.
