South Coast Symphony Announces ‘92-93 Season

The South Coast Symphony has announced its 1992-93 season of five concerts to be given at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Music director Larry Granger will conduct four of the programs. Harvey Felder, assistant conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony, will conduct Jan. 23.

Soloists will include Doug Tornquist, principal tuba in the orchestra; pianists Leon Bates and Jose Carlos Cocarelli (who took second place in the 1989 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition), and the winner of the upcoming South Coast Young Artist Competition.

All programs begin at 8 p.m. Season tickets range from $65 to $130, with $10 discounts for senior citizens and students. Information: (714) 662-7220.

The 1992-93 season:

* Oct. 3: Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides” Overture; MacDowell’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist Bates; Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2.

* Nov. 7: Carlos Chavez’s “Sinfonia India,” Vaughan Williams’ Concerto for Tuba, with soloist Tornquist; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6.

* Jan. 23, 1993: Roberto Sasima’s “Sierra”; concerto to be announced, with the Young Artist Competition winner as soloist; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. Felder, guest conductor.

* March 13: Daniel Robbins’ “Commemorative” Overture; Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, with soloist Cocarelli; Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7.

* May 15: Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem.” Soloists and chorus to be announced.
