LOS ANGELES : Judge’s Order Halts Sale of Church Property
Members of the church run by the late gospel singer and pastor James Cleveland won a temporary court order Friday preventing the financial manager of the church from selling the property.
Various members of the Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles claim that Annette Thomas, who managed the church funds, gained control of the church’s assets through a trust set up just before Cleveland died in February, 1991. According to their attorney, Stephen M. Lowe, the group is trying to keep the church going.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen O’Neil ordered that no sale of the property take place pending a hearing April 20.
