Girl Scout Council Honors Volunteers

Pat Voas of Anaheim and Sharon Barry of Huntington Beach were awarded the Thanks Badge, the highest honor for Girl Scout volunteers, at the recent Girl Scout Council of Orange County recognition dinner at the Disneyland Hotel.

Winning Thanks Badge II were Frankie Morse of Anaheim, Margo Tessier of Mission Viejo and Jean Barrington of Santa Ana. The award recognizes continued outstanding service by previous Thanks Badge recipients.

Honor Pins were presented to Helen Tenken of Garden Grove, Phyllis Lembke of Huntington Beach, Joan Rowe of Laguna Beach and Sue Seager of Newport Beach. The pins are the second-highest honor, given for exceptional service.

Madeleine Hayes, Dana Point; Norma Keating, Yorba Linda, and Jackie Swartz, Mission Viejo, received Appreciation Pins, the third-highest honor.

Others who were recognized include Lloyd Baker, Yorba Linda; Verne Chesebro, Anaheim; Bill White, Cypress; Merritt Read, Fullerton; Sally and Charlie DeBerry, La Habra; Robert Warren Smith, Westminster, and Mike Shanahan, Yorba Linda.

The combined Saddleback/Irvine Valley College Forensic Team garnered the Jim Miller Perpetual Sweepstakes Award in the recent Community College Forensic Assn.’s state championship forensics contest held in Sacramento.

Jason van Divier of San Juan Capistrano, and Aly Panichi, Laguna Niguel, won gold medals.

The team of Christine Orlandella of Dana Point, Aaron Thomas of Laguna Niguel and Panichi also won a gold medal.

Volunteer Margaret Finley Blower of Santa Ana has been selected as the first person to be inducted into United Western Medical Centers’ Hall of Fame.

Besides the honor, the Finley Family Room will be created in Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for the former nurse’s aide and her family.

“Margaret’s support has contributed to the longevity and history of” Western Medical Center, said John Boop, its vice president.

David G. Flores of Laguna Beach and Anaheim resident George L. Pia received Distinguished Alumnus awards at Cal State Los Angeles’ recent 22nd annual alumni awards banquet held on campus.

Flores, director of Alternative Education, Juvenile Court and Community Schools for the L.A. County Office of Education, won the School of Education award.

Pia was honored with the university’s Outstanding Alumnus Award for bringing favorable recognition to the school. He has been listed by Fortune Magazine as one of the 100 most influential Latino entrepreneurs nationwide.

Garden Grove resident Catherine Gaughen was one of 414 high school students from across the country to participate in the recent Presidential Classroom’s 1992 Senior High School Program in Washington, D.C. She is a Pacifica High School student.

Brenda Eastman and Gail Brower were honored as 1992 Honorary Service Award recipients by the Newport Harbor High School PTA. Eastman was honored for her years of service as a member of the PTA board.

Brower, a drama teacher at Newport Harbor High, was recognized for her “outstanding commitment to students.”

Mahla Farghallis, Edison High; Suzanne Pickens, Liberty Christian High; Nary Breen, Huntington Beach High, and Michelle Gholdoian, Marina High School, all in Huntington Beach, received Good Citizen Awards from the Clara Barton Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Milford Dahl, a partner in the Costa Mesa law firm of Rutan & Tucker, has become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was given the honor at the recent annual meeting of the group in Boston.
