Gabriel Tiacoh, who in 1984 at Los Angeles became the only Olympic medalist from the Ivory Coast when he won a silver medal in track and field’s 400 meters, died Thursday in an Atlanta hospital of viral meningitis.
Tiacoh, 29, was admitted to the hospital Feb. 20.
A student at Washington State in 1984, he ran a time of 44.54 seconds in the Olympic final to finish second, less than three meters behind the winner, American Alonzo Babers, who was timed in 44.27. Tiacoh’s best time was 44.30, which he ran to win the NCAA championships in 1986.
