This production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” promises no phony Elizabethan accents, silly-looking tights and off-key lutes.

Instead, today’s performance of the venerable comedy at Claremont McKenna College “will whisk ‘As You Like It’ into the post-modern era where consumerism, political correctness and apathy all vie for our minds and souls,” an invitation to the production states.

But, in keeping with tradition, the central character, Rosalind, will be played by a man.

Directed by Paul Miailovich, a junior at Claremont McKenna majoring in politics, philosophy and economics, “As You Like It” will be the fourth play staged by Under the Lights, an all-student-run theater group.

Today’s outdoor performance begins at 11:45 a.m. in the college’s Badgley Garden at 6th Street and Amherst Avenue in Claremont. Spectators should bring blankets to sit on, or lawn chairs.

The play will be preceded at 11 a.m. by a catered barbecue lunch with music provided by a jazz band. Lunch is $3 (or you can bring your own). For the performance, donations of $3 per person are requested.
