A giant iceberg that broke free from the Antarctic Peninsula last August is on the move again, heading straight toward the Falkland Islands.

Satellite pictures taken at the Weather Center at the military base in the Falklands showed the iceberg, measuring 35 miles by 20 miles, moving at about five miles a day in a westerly direction.

Weather forecasters earlier predicted that it would break up and melt as it moved toward South Georgia, east of the Falklands, and onward to Africa.

Crews of a Royal Air Force Tri-Star aircraft that maintains a twice weekly service between the South Atlantic islands and Britain reported various sightings of the iceberg.

“Perhaps it’s some underwater current that we are unaware of, which is causing this unusual phenomenon,” said Meteorological Office officer Ken Ingermalls.
