Clashes between Moldovan police and separatist forces in the Trans-Dniester region Saturday left at least seven people dead, officials and news reports said.

Trans-Dniester, a narrow strip of land on the border between Moldova and Ukraine, is populated mainly by ethnic Russians and Ukrainians who fear unification with Romania.

The foreign ministers of Russia, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine are to meet Monday to discuss ways to end the fighting.
