PLATFORM : ‘The Bobbsey Twins’

DAVE KARP, mayor of San Leandro, Calif., took part in a question-and-answer session with Democratic presidential candidates Bill Clinton and Jerry Brown last week during the U.S. Mayors Conference in New York. Karp told The Times:

I want to know how we’re going to get people back to work, No. 1. No. 2, we now have a proposal by the Administration for free trade with Mexico and Canada. Companies are already moving down to Mexico, counting on this free trade.

When I asked (Brown and Clinton) about this, I didn’t get a direct answer; I got a political answer. They had 90 minutes with us and plenty of time to elaborate. Well, they didn’t agree with free trade, but they didn’t come up with a solution. I called them “the Bobbsey Twins” because they were pretty much together on just about everything. There isn’t a hell of a lot of difference between the two of them, and I think this is what is bothering the American people. They’re looking for another candidate.

I’m disappointed. I’m really looking for a bipartisan group from Congress to come up with solutions, but I’m also looking for solutions--real solutions--from the candidates. And I have not heard them yet.
