Microsoft Unveils New Version of Windows: Microsoft Corp. unveiled an updated version of its popular Windows operating system for personal computers, escalating a battle with IBM for control of the PC market. The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker, the world’s biggest, made the long-awaited announcement during the Comdex industry trade show in Chicago, saying more than 1 million copies of Windows 3.1 had already entered sales channels. Windows 3.1 will compete with the more powerful OS/2 2.0, which IBM launched last week, until Microsoft comes out with a more sophisticated operating system, named Windows NT, later this year. Microsoft’s stock advanced $3.75 a share to $121.25 in over-the-counter trading.
