GORMAN : Supervisor Urges Closing of Plant

Share

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich has called on state environmental officials to close a Gorman area cement plant that burns hazardous wastes, citing its “spotty record of compliance” with environmental regulations.

Antonovich’s March 27 letter to the director of the state Department of Toxic Substances Control follows news reports concerning state officials pleading with their federal counterparts to reconsider a procedural decision that could ultimately close the National Cement Co.’s Los Robles plant.

“I am hard-pressed to understand why the department would wish to see this operation continue,” wrote Antonovich, who is seeking reelection this year. The facility has been cited repeatedly for burning too much hazardous waste and residents have complained of air pollution.
