Burbank Will Require Developers to Help Fund Public Art

The Burbank City Council has approved an ordinance requiring future builders of large commercial and residential projects to finance a program to provide art in public places.

City officials said the Art in Public Places program is designed to enrich the quality of life in the city.

The ordinance will affect developers of new commercial, industrial and public projects costing more than $500,000, multifamily residential projects costing more than $1.5 million and single-family subdivisions of more than 30 units.

Those builders will be required to allocate not more than 1% of their total building costs, or $300,000 per development, to finance an art project such as a sculpture, painting or ornamental fixture, authorities said. The art can be at the development or another location, officials said.
