Steve Timmons, a former Newport Harbor High, Orange Coast College and USC volleyball standout, announced Tuesday he will rejoin the U.S. national team April 27 in San Diego.

“My wife (Jeanie) has been telling me I should come back to the team,” said Timmons, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who has been playing professionally in Italy the last two years.

Timmons, of Manhattan Beach, ended more than a year of speculation about his return, joining former Olympians Craig Buck, Jeff Stork and Doug Partie on the squad.

Another former U.S. star who has been playing in Italy, Karch Kiraly, also a two-time gold medalist, will not return to the national team. Kiraly said he plans to play on the pro beach tour again this summer.
