Chevron’s Offer Would Benefit All

How unfortunate that the Surfrider Foundation won’t let Chevron Oil Co. proceed with shower and drinking fountain facilities at the site of the groin as reported in your March 19 article. This would benefit all who used the beach, not just “surfriders.”

I question the surfers’ contention that they lost four years of surfing because of the groin. Having lived in El Segundo from 1978 to 1988 with many hours spent jogging and body surfing at that beach, I encountered few beach users and a board surfer was a rarity. Ironically, it wasn’t until the groin had been in place that the surfers found they could use the wave forms it created on the south side.

Could it be that the foundation has found its “deep pocket” source in Chevron? Over the years Chevron has benefited the community in many ways. I would like to hear what commitments the foundation will make upon receipt of their . . . settlement that will benefit the community.
