Monrovia : Focus on Measure A

Share

Tuesday night’s City Council meeting turned into an impromptu, two-hour forum on Measure A, the ballot initiative that would tax residents and businesses for construction of a $9-million police facility.

Residents Ron Pelham Sr. and Debi Phipps spoke against the measure, saying the proposed facility is overkill and comparing it to the Taj Mahal.

“We’re trying to have a champagne appetite on a beer budget,” Pelham said. “We don’t need a 30,000-square-foot police facility in a town with 13,500 residences.”

Police Chief Joseph Santoro and several residents spoke in favor of the new station, saying that the proposed facility’s size was recommended by a consultant and that it is the only way for the city to continue to deliver a high level of police services.
