LA MESA : Police to Go Blue, but Without a Patch

Share

La Mesa police will change the color of their uniforms from tan to dark blue, but the new uniforms will not bear a police patch until there is a final court decision regarding the Mt. Helix cross, La Mesa police said Wednesday.

Beginning April 22, officers will wear the dark blue uniforms, without a shoulder patch. The current police patch includes the image of the Mt. Helix cross, which a judge has ruled violates constitutional separation of church and state. The case is being appealed.

The new uniforms will be paid for by the officers, using personal funds or part of their annual uniform allowance, police said.

“The officers voted overwhelmingly to request that the city authorize this change,” La Mesa Police Officer Assn. President Cathy Adams said in a prepared statement.
