More than 300 current and former lawmakers who wrote bad checks on their House bank accounts will be publicly identified next Thursday, the House Ethics Committee announced Friday.

Release of the list will be politically painful for those on it, many of whom have argued that they were victims of a sloppily run “mom and pop” bank, said Rep. Matthew F. McHugh (D-N.Y.), acting chairman of the committee.

The five-month investigation already has adversely affected more House members than any previous ethics probe. The final list will come out when many members are in their districts for the Easter-Passover recess.

Many of those who overdrew their accounts are among the 52 House members who have announced their retirement or have lost primary elections.

Ranking committee Republican James V. Hansen of Utah said that in 12 years on the panel, he has never seen more emotional appeals from members, who fear the political consequences of being on the list.
