Endangered Species Act Should Be Altered to Cover Economic Impact
Re “State Program Proves That Birds and Buildings Can Coexist” (Commentary by Michael A. Mantell, April 5): It’s about time that the citizens of Orange County be told what may happen if the members of PAVE (Persons Against Virtually Everything) don’t shut up and sit down!
Yes, we have potentially threatened or endangered plants, birds and animals here in Orange County. Yes, the governor has instituted a new program which brings together conservation groups and developers to ensure a necessary balance. But, no, we aren’t ready for a development moratorium.
Mr. Mantell points out that should a moratorium on development occur, it could mean that more than 20,000 Orange County workers in the construction industry could lose their jobs. Already more than 52,000 jobs have been lost in this recession. Can we afford any more? Aren’t 12,000 homeless folks enough?
Let’s give the Natural Communities Conservation Planning effort a chance. It really is the best approach to land planning.
