DUELING FENCES: To protect a pair of nesting gnatcatchers, UC Irvine students have twice built a fence around one proposed site for a chancellor’s home. And twice campus officials have torn it down. But UCI surprised the environmentalists recently by replacing the last one with a sturdier wire fence. Meanwhile, Chancellor Jack W. Peltason says he’ll choose soon among three sites for the new house, which his successor will live in. He won’t reveal which it is but says he’ll “make the people worried about the gnatcatcher happy.”
