NORTH HOLLYWOOD : Land Swap OKd for New Police Station
The Los Angeles City Council by an 11-0 vote Tuesday declared that a land swap needed to facilitate the construction of a new North Hollywood police station would have no significant impact on the environment.
The vote helps clear the way for constructing the station on a vacant parcel now owned by the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks. The site is in the 11600 block of Burbank Boulevard near the Hollywood Freeway.
In 1989, voters approved a $176-million bond issue to finance new and expanded police facilities. One of the projects identified for construction was a new North Hollywood station to replace the existing one at 11840 Tiara St.
The two-acre Tiara Street site is considered too small to accommodate the planned 31,000-square-foot station, which also will have 240 parking spaces. On Feb. 24, the city Recreation and Park Commission agreed to swap its 2.75-acre Burbank Boulevard site for the city-owned North Hollywood station parcel. Parks officials plan to convert the old station into a senior citizens center.
