Health and safety considerations restrict the time and areas dogs are allowed on most state and city beaches. Aside from sanitary reasons, wilderness officials fear that dogs may chase shore birds and prevent them from feeding. Because limited beach access is difficult to monitor, many beaches prohibit dogs from the entire beach and path areas.
