Buyback Program Yields 51 Guns
A steady stream of gun owners traded their firearms for money Tuesday on the first day of the San Diego Police Department’s gun buyback program.
Two hours after they opened for business at the police pistol range, officers had purchased 32 handguns, 18 shotguns or rifles and one assault pistol, said Mona Vallon, police property manager. All the guns will be destroyed and the metal will be recycled unless a check of the serial number shows that a gun was reported stolen, Vallon said.
The buyback program, suggested by Police Chief Bob Burgreen and approved by the City Council last year, offers $25 for each regular weapon and $50 for assault rifles.
