Alyeska to Pay Tanker Waste Fines: In response to complaints first raised by industry critic Charles Hamel, the operator of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline has agreed to pay $20,000 to settle federal charges that it improperly dumped tanker waste. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accused Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. of letting two tankers pump clean-out waste from its tanks into Alyeska’s ballast-water treatment plant at Valdez, Alaska. The fines were the maximum allowable under the administrative complaint brought last August, the EPA said.
