FILLMORE : 2 Firms Picked to Revamp Downtown

The city of Fillmore chose architectural firms from Ventura and Santa Ana to revamp Fillmore’s downtown business district and plan a tourist complex that city officials hope will boost the local economy.

City planners said that final contract negotiations with the firms are expected to be brief, and work should begin on the project by mid-May.

The City Council chose Mainstreet Architects of Ventura to rewrite zoning guidelines for the Central Avenue business district, and asked Turrini and Brink of Santa Ana to design the tourist complex on 13 acres of former railroad right-of-way property in the downtown area.

The two firms were among four finalists in competition that began early this year, with nine Southern California designers participating. Officials had intended to pick a single consultant to create both the zoning guidelines and the tourist complex, but City Council members decided last month to split the project.

“We’ve been fortunate to have such a highly qualified group to select from,” said City Manager Roy Payne. “All four firms were very close.”
