A 21-year-old Spring Valley gang member believed to be the getaway driver in the fatal shooting of a teen-ager in National City was sentenced Thursday to 16 years to life in state prison.

The term was handed down to Gustavo Pimentel, who was convicted Feb. 21 of second-degree murder in the June 29, 1991, death of Luis Coronado, 18. San Diego Superior Court Judge Herbert Exarhos also fined Pimentel $1,000.

Felipe Torres Juarez, the 17-year-old suspect believed to be the actual gunman, has been ordered to stand trial as an adult, but his case is pending because of a mental competency issue.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Gloria Michaels said Coronado was “on his own corner in his own neighborhood” when he was shot four times.
