CARDINAL: In his only Holy Week liturgy away from downtown Los Angeles, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony will celebrate Mass tonight during a 2 1/2-hour Easter vigil service at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Encino.

The cardinal will also baptize 11 new members of the 2,300-family parish, according to Msgr. Gerald E. Wilkerson, the pastor. Mahony will light the Easter candle and bless the baptismal waters during the service, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

The church is at 5011 White Oak Ave. near the corner of Ventura Boulevard.

PASSOVER: On the second night of Passover, the eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the exodus of Israelites from slavery in Egypt, Burbank Temple Emanu El will celebrate the occasion with a community Seder tonight starting at 7:30 p.m.

Rabbi Efraim Warshaw and Cantor Laurie Bonn will lead the ritual meal at the 45-year-old synagogue affiliated with the Conservative branch of Judaism. The synagogue is at 1302 N. Glenoaks Blvd.

The Seder will feature children’s participation, group singing of traditional melodies and contemporary readings.

SUNRISE: The Rev. Jerry A. Jones, president of the Burbank Ministerial Assn. and founding pastor of Burbank Community Church, will give the sermon at the 16th annual Easter Sunrise Service at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Hollywood Hills.

About 1,500 people are expected to attend the 5:45 a.m. service Sunday on the forecourt of the cemetery’s Birth of Liberty Mosaic. Intended as a San Fernando Valley-wide service, the program features a 60-voice chorale assembled from choirs at Burbank First Methodist Church and Reseda First Baptist Church.

Salvation Army Capt. Kathryn Russell of Burbank, Pastor Jim Obermeyer of Toluca Lake Foursquare Church and the Rev. Johnny Carlson of Magnolia Park United Methodist Church will participate in the service.

BREAKFASTS: An egg hunt for the children, special music programs and an early-riser service are common added attractions on Easter Sunday, but a number of San Fernando Valley area churches also are squeezing breakfast into their morning schedules.

Pancake breakfasts will be served by Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 16603 San Fernando Mission Blvd., Granada Hills, at 7 a.m.; St. James Presbyterian Church, 19414 Ventura Blvd., Tarzana, at 8 a.m., and Woodland Hills United Methodist Church, 5650 Shoup Ave., at 8:30 a.m.

Other breakfasts will be served by Burbank-Toluca Lake First Church of Religious Science, 260 N. Pass Ave., beginning at 7:30 a.m., and by First Presbyterian Church of North Hollywood, 5000 Colfax Ave., at 8:15 a.m.

ENTERTAINERS: The 42nd annual Archbishop’s Mass and breakfast for the entertainment industry will honor comedian Tom Dreesen and veteran radio and television personality Tom Hatten on April 26 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

Dreesen, whose stand-up routines often include jokes about his Catholic upbringing, is being honored for his charitable efforts, including his annual fund-raisers for multiple sclerosis research.

Hatten will be recognized for his long association with “wholesome entertainment” in hosting children’s programs and film classics on local television.

Catholic layman Thomas Monaghan, the founder of Domino’s Pizza, will give a talk at the breakfast. Cardinal Roger M. Mahony will celebrate Mass at the event.

EDUCATION: Jackie Goldberg, a past president of the Los Angeles City Board of Education, speaks on problems in education at the 8:15 p.m. service Friday of Temple Shir Chadash, which meets at Woodland Hills Community Church, 21338 Dumetz Road.

Goldberg is an aide to county Supervisor Gloria Molina and teaches English as a second language at Grant High School.
