Alliances between movie studios and fast-food chains like McDonald’s or Burger King are common these days. But what do you do when your movie has an environmental theme? For the animated feature “FernGully . . . the Last Rainforest,” 20th Century Fox is giving away trees.

Actually, they’re tree seeds and it’s part of the studio’s tie-in with Pizza Hut, which is giving away a drinking glass that turns into a terrarium so you, too, can start your own rain forest.

“This was a natural extension of the film,” says Fox’s senior vice president of licensing and merchandising, Al Ovadia. “We wanted to do something that was consistent with the feeling of the film and environmentally safe.”

“FernGully . . . the Last Rainforest” takes place in the Australian rain forest and features the voices of Robin Williams, Tim Curry, Samantha Mathis and Christian Slater, among others.

The idea for the promotion was hatched by Pizza Hut director of children’s marketing, Mark Mears. “We didn’t want to come out with the same old trinkets and trash that the other fast-food companies do to promote movies,” he says. “We wanted to go a step beyond and provide more of a message to kids.”

The studio’s other environmentally correct tie-ins include posters from Dial soap printed on recycled paper, place mats with rain-forest facts from Green Giant and, from Suncoast Musicland, a chance to win a trip to the Australian rain forest.
